How To Clean Windows

Washing windows is no ones idea of fun. In fact, if you’re like most home owners, its the last thing on the housework list you ever look at. First of all it always seems to take forever, and secondly it’s a bit of a messy job. It’s also has a short lived appreciation time for, as soon as you have cleaned the windows, undoubtedly a child will want to touch them, or lick them! A pet will put their nose on them or there’ll be some snap storm that sends dust, dirt and debris to stick to your once clean windows.how_to_clean_windows

Ideally, windows should be washed twice a year, but it’s a task most people don’t look forward to. Part of what makes window washing such a chore is that homeowners insist on doing it with wadded-up paper towels or newspaper, spray cleaner, and a ton of elbow grease.

But, all that rubbing isn’t a good idea. You jhow_to_clean_car_windowsust end up moving dirt around from one spot to another and putting a static charge on the glass, which attracts yet more dust and dirt. As soon as you finish, the window looks dirty again.

The best techniques doesn’t require hours of time, or a lot of elbow grease and certainly no wadded up newspaper.

Whow_to_clean_shower_glasshen starting (if time is of the essence) you should allow around 5-10 minutes per window pane (more if you have multipane windows).

The hardest part: Getting started.

The easiest part: Standing back and admiring your work.

What to do:

If you have large picture window then there is no point using tiny tools. You need large. The easiest washing solution is simply a bucket full of warm water with a squirt of dishwash in it. Don’t mix it around – the best solution has least bubbles. The best tool for this part is a fluffy squeegee. For large windows you are best to use a large one. They soak up lots of soapy water and knock the dirt loose without scratching the glass. Make sure you push the squeegee all over the window pane. Leave no part dry!

Starting at the top left, take a dry squeegee (this has to be a rubber lipped one, no fluff on this squeegee!)  and pull the squeegee over the soapy pane in a reverse-S pattern (left-handers would start at the top right). At the end of each stroke, wipe the squeegee’s blade clean with dry cloth. Lint-free is preferable like old cloth nappies.

Remove any water remaining on the edges of the glass with a damp, wrung-dry chamois. Chamois are great for soaking up wetness but don’t leave streaks. Don’t forget to dry the windowsill with a rag.

Now stand back and enjoy your handywork!
